Helping an Anxious Dog Through Storm Season: Calming Techniques That Work

by Petora Australia on Aug 03, 2026

For many Australian dog owners, storm season brings more than just rain — it brings a stressed, pacing, panting dog hiding under the bed. Noise-related anxiety is one of the most common behavioural challenges pet owners face, and understanding how to manage it can make a huge difference to your dog's quality of life.

Recognising the Signs of Noise Anxiety

Not every dog shows anxiety the same way. Common signs include:

  • Pacing, panting, or trembling
  • Hiding or trying to escape to a "safe" spot
  • Excessive drooling
  • Destructive behaviour, particularly around doors and windows
  • Vocalising — whining, barking, or howling

Create a Safe Space

Set up a quiet, enclosed area — like a covered crate or a small room away from windows — where your dog can retreat during storms. Familiar bedding and toys can help reinforce that this space is safe.

Try Pressure-Based Calming Tools

Calming vests that apply gentle, constant pressure (similar to swaddling) have helped many anxious dogs relax during stressful events. Ear-covering bands that reduce the intensity of thunder and loud noises can also help, particularly when paired with a calm, reassuring environment.

Desensitisation Training

For long-term improvement, gradually exposing your dog to recordings of thunder or fireworks at a low volume — paired with treats and calm praise — can help reduce sensitivity over time. This should be done slowly and never forced.

What Not to Do

Avoid punishing anxious behaviour, as this can increase stress rather than resolve it. Similarly, overly excited comforting can sometimes reinforce anxious behaviour — calm, steady reassurance works better than heightened emotional response.

When to Seek Professional Help

If your dog's anxiety is severe — including self-injury, prolonged panic, or anxiety that's worsening over time — speak with your vet. In some cases, a combination of behavioural strategies and veterinary guidance is the most effective path forward.

Storm season doesn't have to mean a stressful season for you or your dog. With the right combination of environment, tools, and training, most dogs can learn to cope far better with noise-related triggers.
